Life Balance

So, I took a career assessment test today for fun. I never know how accurate those tests are really but I find them fun and I lose 5 min of my day, so what?! ;) Sometimes the results are way out there but occasionally I have found that if I answer the questions honestly, some of the results do make sense to me.

Like this one from today for example: 

You are a listener.
Your strong work ethic, devotion and perception are valuable traits. And your commonsense perspective and down-to-earth approach to problems will be greatly appreciated in a variety of fields.
"Choose a career that allows you to use your accuracy and service-minded nature to get daily results"

I can easily see how this applies to my personality. Now where is the test to find out exactly what I should be doing with my life...hmm

I've been thinking a lot lately about the concept of life balance. I know that I used to have that (although in the moment I did always feel like I did) and how I somehow lost it. It was like one day I woke up in a size bigger pants, sluggish, not consistently working out and wondering, "what the heck happened?" I think a lot of it was going through a major change in my life. I got my first real full time job in a field that I was not prepared for in any way. I was stressed out. I was tired a lot. I chose convenience over health. I was working 45-50 hours per week (which I still do some days) and let's just be honest, sometimes it's hard work to achieve that balance.

There is no real excuse to not take care of myself and sometimes its hard to face your own faults but I think it's best to just own up to it and feel happy knowing that I am not stuck. I am not helpless. I am relentlessly taking control back. I am moving forward and not looking back.


You have to decide what matters to you most in life and non-apologetically go for it. Life is way too short to not be living how you want to live your life. I am starting to write out my plans moving forward and I am excited to feel motivated again! Be prepared to see a lot more accountability posts. and a lot of rants/tangents :)

Run or Dye & Stay Accountable

Have you ever wanted people to throw gobs of dye at you while you are running a 5k? Then you must sign up for a Run Or Dye event!

I did one with my friend Evelyn and it was crazy fun. I never thought I'd actually enjoy getting paint thrown at me.
But clearly I had a good time.
I think running with friends always makes everything better anyway. 

Would I do one again? Definitely. I was really grateful to have someone else drive us home though. I don't think I would have liked to drive home with all of that dye on me.


Accountability is one of the hardest yet most important facets of sticking to a workout or diet plan. Someone e-mailed me recently asking me if I had any tips or tricks for staying accountable so here's a few tips:

1. Write down your goals, don't just think them 
Putting goals on paper makes them more real than if they are just ideas in your head. Once you have the goal(s) written, write down the steps you'll need to get there. Focus on achieving one step at a time.

2. Have an accountability partner 
Maybe your hubby or one of your best girlfriends. Knowing that someone is going to check in on you may help you stay on track. A strong support system is such a blessing! If you have one, don't ever lose sight of that. 

3. Plan and prepare
Make an effort to be proactive about your goals. Set out your gym clothes the night before. Prep your meals for the week on Sundays. Throw out the junk food in your house. Write down your workouts ahead of time. There are so many ways that you can do a few little extra things that take MINUTES to help keep you on track!

3. Use your phone
We may so much money for these darn things, might as well use them to help us stay accountable as well! There are so many fitness/diet apps out there now and many of them are free! Maybe you could make it a goal to record your meals for a week using your phone.

4. Surround yourself with positive 
Keep the attitude around you positive whether it be with positive people, music, motivational books, inspirational Facebook pages, anything that will keep you in a positive mindset. Good mood = much more likely to stick to your goals. Bad mood = greater chance you'll throw in the towel

Say hello to my new Brook's!

So I finally went and did what I've been meaning to do for months - I went to Road Runner and picked out a new pair of running shoes.

They didn't have my size (of course) because I have wide feet (why do they never have enough WIDE shoes?) so I had to get them ordered. But, alas, they finally came in and now I get to rock them on all of my runs.

My first adventure with these shoes was a nice little run down at the beach today. I'll give a more thorough review of the shoes after I get a few more miles on them!

In other news, I'm officially signed up for the Mountains 2 Beach race in Ventura on May 25! I don't have any major races until then so my goal is to go all out at this race. We are about 16 weeks out from the race which gives me plenty of time to properly train. I'm excited to share the entire process with you guys!

Finally, a little encouragement on this Saturday afternoon. The power of owning your choices.

You have value beyond measure. Don't let things or people rattle you. Stand firm in your goals, dreams, and beliefs. If you have a dream, chase it. The size is irrelevant. Why not you? The only thing standing in the way of your dreams are your own doubts and fears; you are limiting yourself. Choose to see beyond the self made barriers.

Part of the changing process is owning your CHOICES, both good and bad. Life presents you various situations but you CHOOSE your response to them. You are in the driver seat, the author of your own story... if you don't feel that way, it's time to make a change.

Don't Give Up

You know that moment when you want to stop, when all of a sudden your body feels tired, your mind is starting to wander, when you start to justify why you DESERVE to cut your workout short.... THAT IS WHEN YOU NEED TO KEEP GOING THE MOST! That is when change happens. That is when confidence happens. Those moments test you, challenge you and most of all they propel you in the direction of your goals! Fight for your goals :)

Little by little becomes a lot

Yesterday I went for a 4 mile run. Running is finally starting to feel *gasp* good again. I'm definitely slow but that's okay because my endurance is slowly increasing which is my main priority. Whether its an inch or a mile, progress is still progress.

I had honestly not really grasped the concept that it really is the little things that matter. Little things add up to big things in all areas of your life whether it be dietary choices, work outs, spending habits, etc. I'm working on improving the little things in all areas right now :)

After my run I quickly showered and headed up to TO for my cousin's 21st birthday at Claim Jumper. I had never been there before. I know, I live under a rock. The portions were huge! I shared grilled chicken, veggies and a salad which ended up being the perfect amount.

How cute is this ice rink? It was out in front of Claim Jumper. I've only ice skated 3 times in my whole life but definitely think it's one of the best things ever.

Also, can we just talk about how I successfully walked into Target today to return an item and did not purchase a thing!? Danielle: 1 Target: 34395893547

Not Ready to Let Go

We may fall, stumble, quiver, bleed, bruise and bend but that doesn't mean we have to break. I am not ready to let go of blogging, running and sharing my journey with you all. I hope you'll still have me :)


My goodness it has been quite a while since I have been back on the blog and in the social media scene. I have had quite a few personal obstacles strike me the past few months but I am grateful to say that I am now healthy, happy and on the upslope. Thank you for being patient with me.

I will be back tomorrow with more!
